Emergency Assistance

The Embassy can assist in finding medical help, contacting family members in the U.S. and transferring emergency funds, visiting American Citizens in jail, and making arrangements in the event an American citizen dies.

Notary Services 

Notary services are available for all documents destined to be used in the United States.  The only notary public in Chad that is recognized in the United States is a U.S. Consular Officer at the Embassy.  You do not have to be a U.S. citizen to use this service.  Documents may include statements made under oath, power of attorney, affidavits, true copies, and acknowledgments.  Government-issued ID is required for persons signing documents.
Fees for notary services, paid in USD or the equivalent CFA, are as follows:

• USD 30.00
• USD 20.00 for each additional copy
• USD 30.00 for each certified, true copy of a document.

Selective Service Registration

For information on how to register, males who have attained the age of 18 years may visit the following website: http://www.sss.gov/.  Dual nationals of the U.S. and another country are required to register, regardless of where they live.

Tax Information

American citizens must report their worldwide income on their federal income tax returns. Living abroad or earning income outside of the United States does not relieve a U.S. Citizen of the responsibility for filing a tax return.  However, U.S. citizens living and/or working abroad may be entitled to various deductions, exclusions and credits.  The Consular Section has a limited supply of federal tax forms.  No state or local tax forms are provided.

Federal Benefits Assistance

The consular section provides general federal benefits information such as routine inquiries, follow-up inquiries, applying for Federal Benefits and Social Security numbers.  Those who qualify for benefits may collect and cash their monthly checks at the Embassy. Absentee Voting Assistance

The Voting Assistance Officer (VAO) at the Embassy can assist you with registering to vote and/or requesting an absentee ballot for state and federal elections.  You can send your voting materials (absentee ballot request form, voted ballot card, etc.) to your voting district in the U.S. through the Embassy free of charge; however, you cannot receive your ballot through the Embassy’s mail facility.  The VAO has guidebooks that explain the process state-by-state.
